People have been preparing for the upcoming Tabaski celebration for weeks now and today is finally the BIG day!

Of the two great celebrations, Ramadan and Tabaski, the latter is generally the favourite one, as everybody gets to eat meat. It’s the day when every family slaughters a male animal, (or more, depending on your financial situation) – preferably a ram. If you can’t slaughter a ram (they’re immensely expensive at this time a year), you can slaughter a buck, a bull or a camel – and if you can’t afford any of those either, your last option is a rooster.

This picture was taken from the archives and is posted in honor of an old friend of mine, who loves her country but lives far away from it. If all goes well, I hope to visit her family.

Is this anything to do with Eid? I might go and do some research instead of lazily asking, I’m just curious after being sent a lovely Eid related photo around this time last year of my then boyfriend (who was Egyptian) slitting the throat of a sheep.
@ J: actually, the Arab name of this feast is “Eid al Adha”, or “Eid al Kabir”, and it is not the only “Eid” in Muslim religious calendar. This one is the feast of the sacrifice of the ram.
Happy Tabaski to everybody, best wishes!
Interesting tradition to slaughter only a male animal. I hope you got to celebrate, too.
