Wintertime in Niger is when Anette and I pack our saddle bags on a cool Saturday morning, invite the dogs to join us and ride out to wherever our hearts desire. Set under a spotless sky, our bush rides have no deadlines and our personal life quality meter fills to a maximum. Both canine and equines like to take a dip while we humans prefer to sunbathe above the water surface. The combination brings us every so often to one of the seasonal lakes in our area, where this picture was taken not long ago.

Far away from roads and traffic jams, my heart breathes under the endless sky. Here, surrounded by horizons of unspoiled nature, I taste the kind of freedom that civilization can never offer, where time stands still and we can simply “be”.

In my dreams, this is what I long for – and then, I realise: I am living my dream.
