One of the best things about riding a horse in the Zinder is that they are great blinds for approaching birds! With Niger having more than five hundred species, I am always on the lookout for a species I have never seen before…


My latest “discovery” was a Great Spotted Cuckoo, that sat in a tree not far from Sheba’s favourite seasonal lake.


The observation has been entered at Niger’s very own Birdwatching database (NiBDaB) and experts told me that the bird most probably is a permanent resident of the area, rather than a migratory visitor. Which is good news, because it means I have high chances of encountering it again!
